“CANTA” CARTOON
No action by council
The City Council took no action last evening on a request from the president of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association (Mr J. Green) that it join his association in demanding a public apology, naming the editor and artist of a cartoon iin “Canta," the students' journal, showing the former Mayor (Mr A. R. Guthrey). Mr Green asked that the council join in the demand because of Mr Guthrey’s long service to the city as a councillor and Mayor. “I share the feeling of the R.5.A.,” Cr H. G. Hay said. “It was despicable that there should be a cartoon of this nature. It has got to a pretty low ebb when students can hold up anyone to ridicule in this way. It deserves the possible strongest condemnation, and I am sorry Cr Caygill is not here to hear that.” When the Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering) went on to the next clause of his statement, Cr H. L. Father dead.—Mr D. H. S. Riddiford, father of Mr D. J. Riddiford, the Minister of Justice, died in Calvary Hospital, Wellington, early yesterday morning, aged 88. He was a director of the Wellington Publishing Company and of the Gear Meat Company. —(PA)
