Dismissal of appeal
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 12. An appeal by a 33-year-old bookshop proprietor against conviction on 13 charges of selling, printing, and prossessing indecent photographs was dismissed by Mr Justice Woodhouse today, but he reduced the total fines imposed from $lO5O to $3BO. Dennis William Shirley had been convicted of seven charges of selling indecent photographs, three charges of printing them, and three charges of posessing them between August 23 and October
Taking into account that Shirley was fined $lO5O on the 13 charges for what was virtually a first offence, the Judge considered the sentence somewhat execessive. He reduced the fines on the first five charges from $5O to $2O, and those on the remaining eight from $lOO to $35. The orders as to costs were not affected.
