VAN GLORY HAS GOOD WIN

"The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. Few owners can have matched the remarkable success of Mr N. Metyasevlc, of Christchurch, whose filly. Van Glory, held off the hot favourite, Roydon Roux, In a tense struggle for honours in the North Island Oaks at Alexandra Park on Saturday night. Mr Matyasevic, a restaurant proprietor, has been racing standardbreds for more than 30 years, and not one of them, he says, has failed to win. "It’s a fact,” he said after the Oaks. "I suppose I have raced 20-odd horses and every single one has won at least one race.” One of the best of them was BeUajily, whose 11 wins before she was sold to the United States included the New Zealand Derby at Addington in 1963.

"She was a really good mare, recalled Mr Matyasevic, "and won nine more in America.” It is hardly surprising Van Glory is good because she is a sister of Bellajily—by Van Dieman from MalabeUa. She was bred by Mr Matyasevic. Van Glory was nicely placed from the start in the Oaks. Into the straight she was handy to the pacemaking Andrele and Ava Hanover. She responded generously when asked for an extra effort by her trainerdriver, D. D. Nyhan, and fought on determinedly to keep Roydon Roux at bay. , Roydon Roux was four back on the rails for a good part of the way. She had some difficulty working clear along the back the last time and, when improving rapidly racing to the home turn, was forced wide. In the circumstances her performance to lose by only threequarters of a length was full of merit. , , x Ava Hanover, one of last season’s top northern two-year-olds, went her best race for several months when she ran on solidly for third. She was well clear of Andrele, with a much bigger gap to the next home, Yarlene. results (N.Z. Press Association? AUCKLAND. Track firm; weather fine.
