Service for mothers

Mothers who shudder at the thought of Christmas shopping with the children tugging at each arm can relax.

From December 20 to 24 the Christchurch branch of the Y.W.C.A. will run a service where mothers can leave their children at the Y.W.C.A. in Madras Street while they get on with their Christmas tasks unhindered. However, the association’s programme secretary (Miss S. M. Forrester) said yesterday the service would not be strictly a creche. Children will be taken from babies to 10-year-olds, and instead of being let loose with toys as they would be in a creche, they will be supplied with plenty of paper, chalk and other creative materials. “For the older children in the group, we will have materials to make Christmas decorations and gifts, and they will be able to use the trampoline outside,” Miss Forrester said. The children at “Santa’s Shopping Service” will be supervised by three adults and six girls of about 14. An hourly charge of 20 cents a child will be made.
