A hat-trick by J. Whitham earned Liverpool a 3-2 victory over the second-placed Derby County, and Manchester City moved into Derby’s position, four points behind United, with a convincing, 4-0, victory over Ipswich. Leeds United, runner-up for the last two seasons, moved into third place, a point behind City, after a goal-less draw with Chelsea. Two of the 10 non-league chibs managed to reach the third round of the English Cup. The amateur club, Blyth Spartans, beat fourth divi-

sion Stockport 1-0, and Boston United upset Hartlepool, 2-1.
