Triangular athletics won by Canterbury

Canterbury convincingly won the annual triangular athletic meeting with Otago and Southland at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday. Canterbury, with 257 points, easily headed Otago (175), and Southland was left trailing with 22.

Otago beat Canterbury by 11 points in Invercargill last year. But on Saturday, Canterbury displayed consistency in all divisions and established an early lead which was never overtaken. Canterbury’s D. Garland whittled 0.1 sec from the New Zealand record when he won the junior men’s 100 metres in 10.7 sec. There was no suggestion, though, that the record would be allowed, because a strong north-easterly helped athletes in the sprint events. In the senior men’s shot ; put, the national men’s weight-lifting champion, G. May (Canterbury) took the first place with a heave of 49ft 7|in from the Canterbury champion, H. Ruffell, who was 3|ih behind. For the third successive year, the All Black wing and national 800 metres champion, B. Hunter (Otago), won both the senior men’s 400 and 800 metres. But it was touch and go for Hunter in the 400 metres, which he took by mere inches from another national-class athlete. J. Bailey (Canterbury). Bailev stepped out hard to wrest the lead towards the middle stages of the race, but Hunter fought back and just edged Bailey to the tape. Both athletes recorded the same time of 50.7 sec. Canterbury’s Miss B. Poulsen had a most successful afternoon. , She won the women’s 100 metres hurdles, the long jump, and the shot put, as well as taking second place in the high jump. Her team-mate, Mrs S. Mene. was also busily successful. She was first in the discus throw, • and second in the shot put, the 1 long jump, and the javelin throw.
