German bus bid again
(N.Z. Press Association/ AUCKLAND, Dec. 12. The Auckland Regional Authority transport committee chairman (Mr J. AllsopSmith) is to plead again with the Government for the reduction of the 45 per' cent duty payable on MercedesBenz buses it plans to buy. This was decided at a meeting of the transport committee held behind closed doors. It is understood that the latest submission will be made in the light of recent Government comments that the present foreign and British preferential duty rates are likely to change with the British entry to the Common Market. The changes are not expected immediately —the Authority has time on its side because it will not begin paying for the buses until they are delivered in 1973.
The committee still backs the German-built Mercedes rather than the British Leyland bus, which is second on the list.
The committee is reported to be unimpressed by British Leyland’s offers to reshape its bus to conform more closely with the authority’s requirements.
The committee decision goes to the full authority next Monday night for ratification.
