Sumner now leads suburban cricket

Sumner has taken the lead in the Christchurch senior suburban cricket competition from Merivale-Papanui, which led for the first four rounds.

On Saturday Sumner, thanks largely to some aggressive batting by R. Steel (67 not out) and J. Monk (54), beat Bumside outright. Sumner gained 19 points and Burnside four , points. Another outright victory went to Hornby, which beat Waltham by seven wickets. G. Wilson, seven for 43 and 30 not out had a good double for Hornby. Points gained were Hornby 15 and Waltham five. Merivale-Papanui failed by 13 runs to gain an outright win over Heathcote and had to be content with eight bonus points compared to Heathcote’s four. For Merivale-Papanui, A.
