Several swimmers beat qualifying times

Canterbury already has a team of nine for the national open swimming championships at Dunedin late in February. This was the number of swim* mers who beat qualifying times for the championships at the Kaiapoi open carnival at the new Kaiapoi Pool on Saturday. Saturday was noteable for a number of good times from swimmers including the New Zealand representatives, Misses S. J. Hunter and J. Parkhouse (both Wharenui). The outstanding agegroup competitor E. Box (Sockburn Park) swum another excellent 100 metres race and his time unofficially beat his Canterbury short-course record. The most encouraging and impressive time of the day was from B. Lewis (Wharenui) in the 200 metres breaststroke when he comfortably beat the national qualifying time in recording 2min 46sec for an excellent win in one of his best times for the distance. Lewis swum above for the last part of the race and it was only over the last 30 metres that he exerted himself with a very impressive sprint which left the other competitors several metres behind. Lewis also qualified for the national championships in the 100 breaststroke event. The young Sockburn Park breaststroker, J. Laugeson, who chased Lewis in the longer race, was only .6sec outside the qualifying time and it should be only a matter of time before he earns himself a trip to Dunedin. Miss Parkhouse who has already qualified for the nationals in freestyle events added the 200 metres backstroke to her list. She also featured in an interesting tussel with Miss Hunter in the eight-length medley event. She finished less than a length behind her club-mate after making an attempt to overhaul Miss Hunter in the freestyle leg. Miss L. Rowe and J. Tomlinson (both Wharenui) qualified in the 200 metres freestyle after an interesting duel in which no more than a body length separated the two swimmers over the whole distance.

J. Symon (Sockburn Park) maintained his good form with another win over his club-mate, R

McCabe, in the 400 metres freestyle. Both swimmers swum casually but broke the national qualifying time. McCabe, however showed a liking for the 100 metres freestyle distance and returned the best time of the seven heats with an impressive Imin o.4sec. Miss Hunter who last year qualified for more events than she could cope with at the national championships about eight has already qualified tor three this year. On Saturday she beat the qualifying time for the 100 metres backstroke. Box recorded Imin 4.3 sec for the 100 freestyle but as shortcourse records are not recognised in Canterbury in the summer he could not claim a record. This situation should be changed tonight however when a recommendation comes before the centre seeking a change to shortcourse records for the summer.
