Record run by Igloo
<N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY. The former New Zealand stayer, Igloo, made a one horse affair of the Christmas Cup at Rosehill on Saturday with a record breaking win at hi* first Sydney appearance. “Igloo Is easily the best horse I have ridden,” K. Langby said after the gelding scored by 10 lengths without ever being extended. Carrying 9-2. Igloo ran the lim in 2mln 30sec, two-tenths of a second faster than the previous record, which was sent by Prince Delville in 1956. The most impressive win—which made the opposition look like tenth-raters practically stamped Igloo’s name on the 3100,000 Perth Cup. Having his first start since his second to Sliver Knight in the Melbourne Cup on November 2, Igloo beat Dark Diamond and Te Amo pointlessly. Igloo will drop to the luxury weight of 8-7 in the Perth Cup, two miles, to be run on January 3. After Saturday’s win he is certain to start a very shortpriced favourite for the race. Racegoers agreed that Igloo’s win was one of the most impressive ever seen at Rosehill. W. Camer, taking full advantage of Star Storm’s light-weight of 7-7, took his mount to the front st the start and raced away with a big lead of from 12 to 15 lengths going along the back of the course. At this stage Langby was content to allow Igloo to log along In fourth place. Nearing the half-mile, when Star Form started to shorten stride, Langby allowed Igloo rein and the gelding quickly bounded up to the lead. Igloo’s owner, Mrs M. E. Tippett, was in America on Saturday. but the horse’s trainer, T. J.~Smith, said he had no doubt she would have made some arrangements to hear the broadcast description of the race, Smith said that Mrs Tippett told him she planned to fly back to Australia to see Igloo run in the Perth Cup.
