Seas mar surf carnival

A strong southerly drift marred the first Canterbury surf life-saving championship carnival at South Brighton yesterday. The drift caused havoc with buoys, moving them out of line and causing the cancellation of several events. The junior and women’s sixman , rescue and resusdtation heats were cancelled along with the senior four-man alarm heats and the junior and Women’s four man rescue and resuscitation heats.

The heats from the next three carnivals will now count towards final plaeings in these events. The senior surf-ski rescue heats and final were not held, and these will probably be run at one of the three remaining championship carnivals. Of the finals decided yesterday, the most interesting, as was expected, was the semor iron-man event, a new event on the championship programme. D. Neate (Taylor’s Mistake) built up an early lead over K. Pearson (Sumner), and won comfortably.

In the junior iron-man—also a new event—the South Brighton surfer, B. McDonald, gained a good . win after being third at the end of the first leg of the three-leg event. However, he had moved to first at the end of the second leg and was never challenged over the final stages. The junior surf-ski relay final was won by the Sumner pair, J. Quilter and J. McKay. Along with North Beach B, which won the second heat—Sumner won the first heat—these two teams were the only ones to reach the final, the others being disqualified. In the final, Sumner managed to complete the event, but the North Beach crew was disqualified.

P. Stuart (New Brighton) won the final of the junior beach sprint in the closest of finishes from P. Schou (South Brighton) and the final of the women’s beach relay was won by Waimairi which beat the title-holder. North Beach A, into second place.

The national champions in the six-man rescue and resuscitation last season, Taylor's Mistake, was a clear winner in the first heat with only five penalty points. It was well clear of South Brighton A with 8.20 points. Boats swamped The first senior surf-boat race of the day provided a humorous situation, with all four boats in the event being swamped trying to negotiate the choppy breakers. All had to get their boats back to the beach and empty them of water before continuing with the race, which was eventually won by New Brighton. The senior surf race resulted in a comfortable win for the pre-race favourite, A. B. Kindred (New Brighton), with J. Tillson (South Brighton) a close second, and P. Hay (Taylor’s Mistake) third. In senior and junior men’s and women’s surf races, the first 10 to finish qualified for the final to be held at the fourth championship carnival of the season next March. The junior race was won effortlessly by the prominent Can-

terbuiy pool swimmer, J, Symon (New Brighton), with M. Harding (New Brighton) and B. Leitch (North Beach) fighting out a neck-ana-neck finish for second and third respectively. Another Canterbury pool swimmer, Miss P. Horne (South Brighton) competing in her first surf race, was an easy winner in the women's event, with the titleholder, Miss S. Anderson (Taylor’s Mistake) second, and R. Pearson (Sumner) third.

During the day, P, Carpinter, » of the Taylor’s Mistake Club, : was presented with the first Canterbury Surf Life-saver of the , Year award by the president of ’ the Canterbury Surf Life-saving • Association (Mr J, A. Lee). r A handsome trophy donated ’ by the Sumner Club in memory of the late Jim Sutherland, was ’ the award. .
