New unity in Poland

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright > WARSAW, Dec. 12. The Polish Communist Party has made drastic changes in its leadership, strongly supporting the sweeping reforms of the party leader, Mr Edward Gierek. The newly-elected central committee has voted out the Head of State, Mr Jozef Crankiewicz, and the Foreign Minister, Mr Stefan Jedrychowski, from the Politburo —the party’s executive policy-making body. They were replaced by close supporters of Mr Gierek, a forceful ex-miner who became party leader after severe riots in northern Poland last December in which 45 perrons were killed and 1600 injured.

Many strong Gierek supporters were also elected to the Central Committee, expanded from 91 members to 115, and to the key party Secretariat, increased from seven to 11 members.
