Motor imports
Sir,—Patrick Neary shows a proper concern for-- sheepfanners, even if only last Monday he 'compared primary producers to Red Indians trading for rum. But his West Coast “relative assessment” is paradoxical, not at all proper. Exporting coal, however controversial the port, supports car . imports. The Lower Buller Gorge would bother him with “luxury” road on one side and picturesque railway on the other, but a West Coast road can be a way to mineral resources no longer to remain latent; .that proposed from Inangahua Junction to Stockton is an example. It could also provide a scenic short cut to the Heaphy Track into which I nosed my car last month. Will Japan be satisfied with coal deliver-
tes, maybe even get a consuming taste for “Red Indian” lamb, or wifi the “leftists," whom Patrick Neary absolved: from blame last Monday, muck things up, and ensure for his further delight more coal idle in the ground and fewer cars for “going places”?—Yours, etc., A. B. CEDARIAN. December 11, 1971.
