Games assurance given
The written assurance sought from the City Council by the Games organising Committee that the 1974 Commonwealth Games facilities would be ready by 1974 was given yesterday. "The assurance was delivered by the Town Clerk (Mr M. B. Hayes),” said the secretary of the organising committee (Mr A. W. Barrett), yesterday. Mr R. S. Scott, chairman of the committee, had asked the Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering), to give the written undertaking by December 10. The relevant paragraph reads: “An assurance is hereby given that the swim-
ming and athletics facilities at Queen Elizabeth II Park will be completed and functional by October 1, 1973.” “We are very pleased to receive it,” Mr Barrett said. A supporting note from the contractors, Messrs Paynter and Hamilton, was attached to the assurance. Mr Scott was watching the first pile being driven for the Games diving pool at Queen Elizabeth Park when the written assurance was delivered. “It is the best news we have had for some time,” he said later. “I feel sure that it will add to nation wide , support for the Games fund appeal —support which has already begun to flow freely again.”
