No tyre crisis, say manufacturers
(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, Dec. 10. Any suggestion of a lyre crisis in New Zealand now or in the near future was “utter nonsense,” said the' secretary of the New Zealand Rubber Manufacturers Association (Mr L. V. Phillips), in Lower Hutt today. He was replying to comments made on Tuesday by
the executive director of the Retail Motor Trade Association (Mr C. F. Stone), who said there was a “drastic shortage” of tyres, especially radial tyres and motor-cycle tyres in New Zealand. Mr Phillips said there was almost no shortage of locallymade tyres for passenger vehicles and trucks, and supplies of these to retailers had increased, substantially in the last four months. “Production of the radial types alone will be more than 60 per cent up for this period,” he said. Almost all motor-cycle tyres were imported, and this was the reason they were not readily available. “It is regrettable that the Customs Department does not see fit to grant additional import licences to improve the position. This is the Only reason for the shortage,” he said.
