Appointment to second chair in education
Dr G. A. Nuthall has been appointed to the second chair in education at the University of Canterbury. He is at present a senior lecturer in education. Dr Nuthall, who is 36, was educated at Christ’s College and at the Christchurch Teachers’ College. He gained an M.A. degree with firstclass honours from the University of Canterbury in 1962, was awarded a Fulbright scholarship for postgraduate study, and gained a doctorate from the University of Illinois in 1966. He is well known in the academic world for his research into classroom behaviour. Last year, he was for six months a research '.fellow at the Centre for
Advanced Study at the University of Illinois, where he continued his analysis of classroom interaction and the experimental study of teaching methods. His work, “Thinking in the Classroom,” published by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research in 1965, is regarded as a pioneer study in classroom interaction. Dr Nuthall has contributed major articles to journals in Britain, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand which have attracted considerable international interest in the teaching research project of the education department of the University of Canterbury. Dr Nuthall will take up his new post in February.
