Rep. runners prominent in Bumside relays
The Canterbury representatives, Misses D. Shield (Mairehau High School) and B. Peterson (HiUmorton High School) each broke a record of the seven which fell in the sixth annual Burnside relays held at Burnside High School yesterday. Of the seven new times established six were in girls’ events. The only boys* record was in the 4 x 800 metre*, relay, which Christchurch Boys’ High School won. Miss Shield’s run in the intermediate girls* 1000 metres teams event was the best effort of the day. She had the best individual time of 3min 16.6 sec and passed the 800 metre mark, after having left the rest of the field well behind, in a time better than her own Canterbury under 15 record. The senior boys’ invitation 100 metres contained four Canter-
bury representatives and was won by M. Sutherland (Burnside), who just beat D. Garland CTimaru Boys’ High School), giving Sutherland some consolation after being beaten by Garland at last Saturday's inter-dub meeting. Miss J. White (Burnside) set a new time in the senior invitation 100 metres with 13.5 sec and Miss H. Watson (Mairehau) recorded 3min 22.55ec for the senior 1000 metres teams race. The other senior record went to the St Margaret’s 4 x 200 metres relay team with a time of Imin 53.25ec. The third record in the intermediate girls’ grade was established by Mairehau with 53.45ec in the 4 x 100 metres relay.
