Slipway cut in ice

(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) SCOTT BASE (Antarctica), December 1. The Canterbury University marine biology research team has launched its research programme after completing the difficult task of carving a slipway for its trimaran through the highpressure ice ridge on the beach at Cape Bird.

Using picks and shovels and a petrol-driven rock breaker, Mr J. K. Lowry and his associates have spent several weeks making the launching ramp, supervised by Adele penguins from the nearby rookery. Since Sunday, the team’s trimaran has been fitted with outboard motors and dredging for samples has started near the beach. Dredging in deep water will also be done to continue work done last year.
