Lane driving

Sir, —Traffic officers of the Transport Department are conducting a lane-driving campaign this week in Christchurch. This was brought to my attention this morning by an officer who explained that drivers must try to refrain from continually changing from one lane to another. I would normally have wholeheartedly agreed with the officer had he not found it necessary to travel at only 20 miles an hour on Moorhouse Avenue during a peak traffic period, forcing motorists to change lanes to get past him or, alternatively, to. Join a funeral procession behind him. Perhaps this is ,a new Transport Department device to provoke motorists into changing lanes so that the finer points of lane driving can be explained to them. — Yours, etc., D. J. O’ROURKE. November 22, 1971. [Mr I. W. McLauchlan, chief traffic officer. Ministry of Transport, replies: “The traffic conditions prevailing at the particular time would determine the officer’s speed. I can assure your correspondent that the object of the'campaign was to educate motorists in the correct use of traffic lanes.”]
