Plantations at Bottle Lake
Sir,—We must develop a sense of responsibility towards our environment in the areas surrounding Christchurch. The suggestion made in a recent editorial concem-
ing the Bottle Lake plantations should never be carried out. The people of Christchurch must take heed of what immigrants from the United States and Canada tell us. We must at all costs preserve our natural heritage. It is too easy to give in to the short-sighted demands of local bodies and subdividers where land occupied by trees is at stake. Hundreds of examples in the United States of landscapes obliterated in the name of so-called urban development tell us all we need to know. The plantations and Waimairi Beach form a wilderness near the city. The city dweller benefits greatly by escaping into these healthy and inspiring surroundings. An imaginative “hands-off” policy of conservation in this area will pay the most dividends in the long run.—Yours, etc., N.R.F. November 30, 1971.
