Forest fire risk high

Logging operations in the Eyrewell forest stopped yesterday afternoon because of the extreme fire risk. The chief ranger for the Forest Sendee in Christchurch (Mr T. E. Bridges) said last evening that the risk in Canterbury forests was extreme in the Omihi area, and also high in the Ashley forest. Mr Bridges said that work at Eyrewell would start again today if the strong north-westerly abated, thus lowering the fire risk.
