Romanides exhibition

Seventeen recent paintings' by Paree Romanides are be-j ing exhibited at the Several! Arts Gallery, 809 Colombo! Street. Paree Romanides has estab-) lished herself as a painter in! the hardedge abstract man-, ner in previous showings of I her work in Christchurch.! and the paintings in this exhibition do not deviate from! this style. Circles, arches, and broad bands are the recurring symbols in her paintings. Divisions of black and white provide her work with strong areas of contrast, and purples, yellow ochres, earthy reds, and browns are often used as supporting colours. The general colour effect is a rich one, but if the circles, half-circles, and other geometric shapes have any deep philosophical meaning, as is suggested by a text from T. S. Elliot posted on the gallery wall, then this meaning is not readily clear. The exhibition will remain open until December 3. —G.T.M.
