P.M. ‘evasive’ on Chathams works
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Nov. 28. Reports on the meatworks section of the Chatham Islands’ economic survey had been received, the Prime Minister (Sir Keith Holyoake), said in reply to a written question by Mr T. '■ M. McGuigan (Lab., Lyttel- I ton). “I expect Cabinet will con-i sider these at an earlv date.”! he said. “Until I have studied them I cannot say w’hether they will be made public or when a final decision on the reopening of the meatworks will be made. How-
ever, the urgency of the matter is appreciated.” - Mr McGuigan described the Prime Minister’s reply as ’ “unsatisfactory, evasive and i lacking in recognition of the » urgency he claimed was ap- . predated.” “His promise to study the ’ reports immediately on re- ; ceipt, made to me on August ■ 10, the day the Government ) closed the meatworks, is clearly not being honoured. ’ I “There will also be con- ■ siderable disappointment ' with Sir Keith’s indecisive-! ! ness over the publishing of I i the report. It should be made) • public. The Government’s ■ procrastination is typical of’ the callous disregard it has consistently shown towards the people of the Chatham Islands.” Mr McGuigan said that he had stressed constantly the| i importance of the meatworks | i being reopened no later than | i November if fanning on the -jislands is to remain viable. I “All the relevant information must be in the Government's hands by now.” .!
