Trust may site Scott cottage
The Ferrymead Trust hopes to incorporate a cottage closely linked with Captain R. F. Scott and his expedition’s photographer, H. G. Ponting, in its historic village plan, if a way can be found to get the cottage, at present in Papanui Road and under threat of demolition, to Ferrymead.
The chairman of the trust (Mr G. L. Evans) said yesterday that the cost of transporting the cottage to Ferrymead, and renovating it, would be about $2OOO. Now owned by the New Zealand Antarctic Society, the cottage was used as "a darkroom by Ponting, and visited frequently by Captain Scott. It is about 70 years old.
Mr Evans said that the cottage, perhaps with the help of a photographic company, could be made into a kind of j photographic museum. Many •of the original darkroom fittings used by Ponting have (survived.
Mr Evans said when he saw the story of the cottage m “The Press” on Saturday he went to inspect it with Mr W. J. A. Brittenden to see what could be done by the trust towards saving it. He found it to be in fairly good condition, but moving iit could be a problem, he said.
i The cottage is sited behind other buildings, and if taken ito Ferrymead would have to ibe “sliced off” at roof level, as it is 19ft high,
