Nominations approved

( N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Nov. 26. The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved the nominations of the Assistant Attorney-General, Mr William Rehnquist, and a lawyer, Mr Lewis Powell, to the United States Supreme Court.

The panel voted 16 to nil in favour of Mr Powell, but the vote on the more controversial nomination of Mr Rehnquist was 12 to four.

The votes against Mr Rehnquist were cast by Democrats —Senator Birch Bayh, of Indiana, Senator Philip Hart, of Michigan, Senator Edward Kennedy, of Massachusetts, and Senator John Tunney, of California. The nominations now will be considered by the Senate, probably next month.
