HURDLES RECORD

‘Not too old at 32’

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE.

The Australian, Mrs P. Ryan (formerly Miss Kill bourn), broke the world record for the 200 metres hurdles at an international athletics meeting, clocking 2i4.7sec.

Running into a slight headwind, Mrs Ryan clipped one tenth of a second off the record she held jointly with A. Janis (East Germany) and T. Sukniewicz (Poland). The Olympic gold medallist, making a come-back to competitive athletics, said: “I am thrilled. This is the record I have been aiming at since I came out of retirement two months ago. "I wanted that world record on my own. I don’t like sharing it with two others. And I wanted to prove to the ‘knockers’ that I was not too old at 32.

“Now I have proved I’m faster than ever, I’ll forget the 200 metres hurdles and concentrate on the Olympic event, the 100 metres hurdles. “From now on my one aim will be to break the world 100 metres hurdles record of I2.6sec. I think I can do it.”
