FIRMER TONE IN AUSTRALIA IN QUIET TRADING

Mining shares advanced in moderately quiet and selective trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. Industrials were steady, with some worthwhile gains, while oils were very slow to trade.

New 8.H., which has applied for delisting, gained 30c to 560 c. Exchanges have been asked to quote N.B.H.C. Holdings from Monday.

Poseidon added 30c at 1160, while M.I.M. added 12c at 250 c.

Utah, at 225 c added 20c, while B.H. South at 175 c and Bougainville at 158 c were others to gain. Hamersley picked up 7c at 245 c. Among the oils, N.S.W. Oil and Gas was steady on 16c after its report on the Flying Fish well and Bridge gained 1c at 27c. Endeavour, which has announced a 10c call on its contributing shares, closed steady on Ic. North-West shelf partners, Woodside at 88c and Mid Eastern Oil at 70c each gained Bc. B.H.P. gained a further 10c at 942 c and its partner at Mount Newman, C.S.R., was marginally higher at 420 c.
