HAMILTON, Nov. 26. A Ruakura geneticist, Dr A. Carter, has returned from France where he negotiated the purchase of about 30 young beef bulls of the Blonde d’Aquitaine, Maine Anjou, Simmental and Limousin breeds.
The bulls selected have yet to undergo the normal final veterinary tests in France and will then be shipped to New Zealand. They will be quarantined on Somes Island.
The bulls are expected to be in New Zealand by next April and Dr Carter said today that it was hoped to start evaluation tests at mating time next spring.
Research workers were interested not only in the growth rate and carcase quality of the steer progeny but also in the perforiqance of the crossbred female progeny as hill-country beef cows.
Dr Carter said he had received the greatest co-opera-tion from the French, who were very interested in the New Zealand beef-breeding project.
