TELEPHONE TAPPING

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CANBERRA, Nov. 25.

Australia was considering introducing legislation legalising telephone tapping, says the Attorney-General (Senator I. J. Greenwood). Senator Greenwood said the authorisation of the recording of telephone conversations also was being examined.

At present, his approval was needed before Commonwealth Government officials could tap telephones, and this could be given only when national security was involved. However, in some states, the police could tap conversations with the authorisation of a senior officer. Senator Greenwood said: "Areas I have in mind are extortion—such as the recent Qantas bomb hoax—kidnapping, and attempts to prevent the course of justice.”
