GAMES FUND EVENING
Variety and fireworks
A variety evening culminating in the explosion of $2500 worth of fireworks will be held in aid of the Commonwealth Games fund at the Addington Raceway tomorrow.
From 6.30 p.m., when the gates will be opened, until dusk, the audience will be entertained by acrobats, trick-cyclists, brass bands, and a fancy dress parade. Among the competitions will be a demonstration race between six trotting horses, a sulky race with well-known Christchurch personalities as drivers, and a race over 100 metres between a sprinter, a cyclist, and a racehorse.
The cyclist will be P. Brydon, a former New Zealand junior sprint champion; the athlete, G. Anderson, the holder of the junior 100 metres Canterbury record; and the racehorse, Sam Tryax, a trotter driven by Mr D. G. Jones. ■■
At nightfall, all lights will be switched off and fireworks representing the Commonwealth Games symbol and a gun duel between two battleships will be ignited. About 20,000 people are expected to attend if the weather is fine and up to $lOOO raised.
The launching of a $3O skyrocket from the Bank of New Zealand building at 9 p.m. this evening was abandoned because it was considered too dangerous.
