The secretary of the Australian Swimming Union, Mr S. Grange, yesterday described as “ridiculous” moves to cut the number of swimming events at future Olympic Games.
Mr Grange had Just returned from a meeting in Singapore of F.1.N.A.. the world controlling body for swimming, where the International Olympic Committee had recommended that 10 swimming events be cut from future Games.
Swimming at present has 29 events, 15 for men and 14 for women, and the proposed cut would apply from 1976. “It seems ridiculous to suggest that one of the major sports slashes its events when new sports are being added all the time to the Games programme,” Mr Grange said. “The 1.0. C. suggestion was discussed in Singapore but we are certainly not anxious to the cut the programme size. What could happen is that we suggest that each nation’s entries be limited to two instead of the present three.”
