‘No increase intended’ CV.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 24. The Government had no intention of increasing the number of Maori seats in Parliament, said the Acting Minister of Justice (Mr Thomson). Replying to a Parliamentary question from Mr M. Rata (Lab., Northern Maori), Mr Thomson said that neither the number of European seats nor the size of the Maori population made it necessary to change the present number, which had been accepted by Parliament for the last 100 years. There had been no agreed proposal for a change, he added.

Whether the four seats provided adequate representation was a matter of opinion, Mr Thomson said.
