DRUGS IN VIETNAM

New figures published (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, October 13. Five per cent of American servicemen leaving Vietnam are using drugs, according to Defence Department statistics. Dr Jerome Jaffe, director of the Administration’s newly created Drug Abuse Agency, says that probably up to 15 per cent of American servicemen in Vietnam have either experimented with, or occasionally used, such hard drugs as heroin. He told the House of Representatives Armed Services Sub-committee on drug abuse that a special Defence Department programme between June 17 and September 29 showed that of the 103,279 servicemen tested for drug abuse 5214 or .51 per cent, registered positive. He added that the programme, involving tests which all servicemen must undergo before leaving Vietnam, could njt identify those who had recently stopped using drugs.
