Missionary work
The Australian and New Zealand province of the Or* der of St John of God, announced this week that it intended to expand its activities to Papua-New Guinea, and that missionary activities would begin on October 24 at Port Moresby. “Initially, the brothers will care for intellectually handicapped children, many of whom suffer some form of physical disability,” said Brother J. Gibson, provincial of the order in New Zealand. “The Cheshire Home, three miles from the centre of Port Moresby, will be the base for the order’s work,” he said. “At present, there are three girls and 11 boys in residence.” At a later date, .the brothers involved in the Papua projects will undertake other social work. The original party will consist of Brother J, Gibson and Brother B. O’Donnel, both former priors of the Marylands special school at Halswell.
The head teacher at Marylands, Brother Keane, also will go to Port Moresby to assist with the early stages of development. Before the end of the year, another brother qualified in social welfare work will be sent to join the team.
