Butchers’ pay higher

Agreement on a new retail butchers’ award was reached in Wellington this week. Subject to the approval of the Remuneration Authority, the new rate for a journeyman butcher will be $60.40 a week —exactly the same as the basic award rate for a journeyman carpenter. This represents an increase of 16.3 per cent on the rate at the beginning of this year. Until Monday of this week the employers had refused to go above 12.6 per cent.

Most butchers work overtime early on Thursday and Friday mornings, and this work is paid at double time. The journeyman on a 45-hour week will receive $75.50 under the new agreement.
