The first lambs of the new season are now being killed at freezing works in North Canterbury. Sixteen hundred lambs were killed at the Islington works of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company on Monday and 970 at the company’s Picton works yesterday. Another 3000 were on hand at Islington and 1300 at Picton.

The ’ company’s livestock supervisor, Mr G, H. Steel,

said that the quality of the lambs was very good and for the- time of the year they were well matured. On its first killing day for the new season yesterday the Belfast works of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company handled nearly 2000 head. The company’s stock manager, Mr G. R. Burling, also reported that quality was very good.

About 6000 to 7000 lambs and about 5000 ewes are expected to be handled at the Belfast works of Thomas Borthwicks this week, according to the district manager, Mr G. M. Ockenden.

The average weight of lambs killed on Monday at the company’s Canterbury works was about 28.451 b.

While the kill of lambs is proceeding, the companies have not yet announced a schedule of prices for the start of the new season.
