AMBUSH ORDER
Reports of refusal

An American military spokesman said today an investigation was under way into reports that United States troops refused to carry out orders to go on patrol from a front-line firebase near the Cambodian border. At dusk last Saturday a patrol from the First Cavalry Regiment was ordered to leave the firebase “Pace” and take up an ambush position in the area about 80 miles north-east of Saigon which has been the scene of heavy fighting for two weeks.
“Some members of the patrol expressed the wish not to take part in the mission and it was delayed,” the spokesman said. He said that he had no confirmation of unofficial reports reaching Saigon that the men claimed that to obey the order would be suicidal. The order was later repeated but it was then learned that South Vietnamese troops had already taken up positions in the same ambush site and the United States mission was cancelled, he said.
