New charges at Lyttelton
New wharf-handling charges for Lyttelton have been advised by the New Zealand European Shipping Association and will be collected by the Lyttelton Harbour Board on behalf of shipping companies from next Monday.
The charges were considered at a recent meeting convened by the board of local organisations representing importers and shippers.
After more information was received from the lines, the new rates were reluctantly approved, according to the board.
Requests will be made to the association for threemonthly reviews of charges to avoid the necessity for recovery of deficiencies by way of subsequent surcharge after wage and other increases. The charges, with the old rates in parenthesis, will be: Inward.—General cargo, inner harbour, $2.21 a ton ($1.37); Cashin Quay, $2 ($2.75); delivery, $2.35 ($2.27); timber, 36c per 100 square feet (38c). Outward.—General cargo, $4.07 ($3.25); wool, 32c a bale (33c). The charge for frozen meat
is being reviewed with the freezing companies. In some cases the new rates include surcharges of varying amounts up to $1.09 a ton necessary to recoup past deficiencies within six months after which it is hoped by the board that it will be possible to reduce charges accordingly at the next review.
