Fire-proof jel developed

(N.Z. Press Assn —Copyright) SYDNEY, Oct. 12. A Sydney company has produced a chemical gel which is said to extinguish flames four times faster than water.

Associated Polyviny Design Pty Ltd, is making woollen blankets impregnated with the gel as a first-aid wrap-around for fire victims, and as a protector for moving through flames. A director of the company, Mr R. A. Everingham, said that $50,000 had been spent on developing the gel, in which the Australian medical authorities, the United States Army and a Japanese manufacturer were interested.

Tests have shown that the specially-treated blanket can extinguish a blazing dummy or a ground fire within a few seconds, and that when used as a personal "tent” for passing through flames, it will hold enough air for five minutes breathing.
