$9m A DAY TURNOVER

Post Office business The Post Office has reached a turnover of almost s9m a day. The latest annual report of the Post Office says:— Last year the Post Office handled more than 614 m pieces of mail and 5.5 m telegrams. At the end of the financial year there were 1,262,427 telephones connected. Revenue from telephone subscribers in fees and toll calls amounted to $85.4m. Savings bank balances amounted to $946.3m. Staff employed by all branches of. the Post Office numbered 32,359.

During the year the Post Office spent nearly s29m on the development of telecommunications systems and $7.3m on new exchange buildings. Thirty-one new automatic exchanges were brought into service.
