Athletics for winter sportsmen

The University Athletic Club is organising a series of relay meetings designed to attract teams of six from winter sports clubs. The races will be run over four laps of the Dam grass track at each of the five meetings planned and team members will be allowed to run any distance they choose before handing on the baton. “A lot of people get very fit in the winter and then lose their fitness in

the summer,” the University club captain (Mr K. Silcock) explained. The objects were to help these people retain their fitness, provide them with a summer recreation and to foster interest in athletics, he said. Five of these relay meetings will be held, the first this evening. There will be three more, on December 1, January 26 and February 23, before a special trophy meeting on March 3. The club also intends to cater for veteran athletes. At each of these meetings it will have two classes for veterans, masters for athletes between 35 and 39 and presidents for athletes of 40 or more. The events will vary but tonight the distance will be a mile.
