Man dies in explosion
(N.Z. Preu Association.) AUCKLAND, Sept 17. An explosion killed a man and seriously injured his workmate during trenching work at Penrose this afternoon. The man killed was Christian Winter, aged 43, married, of 9 Peace Avenue, Otara.
His workmate, Patrick Roger Morron, of Alamein Road, Panmure, was taken to Middlemore Hospital with multiple injuries. He was treated at the plastic surgery unit and was in a satisfactory condition tonight. The Newmarket police said the accident happened shortly after 1 p.m., when the two men were laying a stormwater drain in Station Road, Panmure.
They were blasting awav rock, when a charge of gelignite apparently exploded prematurely. Mr Winter is believed to have died instantly. Mt Morron was thrown from the ditch under a shower of rock.
