Two earlier successes
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The North Auckland coach, Mr E. Griffin, has twice trained teams that have won the Ranfurly Shield. The first was in 1950, when North Auckland won the shield off South Canterbury in its final match of that season and lost ft, 3-6, to Waikato three defences later. The second was in 1961, North Auckland beating Auckland, 17-11. Auckland regained it only two defences later, winning 6-3.
