Unusual house takes shape
Six weeks ago, residents of Huntsbury Hill were puzzled by the building of a 50ft tower on a section in Parklands Drive. Many christened the tower “Polaris Five.” Now, however, their queries have been answered as the tower has become the focal point of *a house built on three levels, with the inside entrances to all rooms off a spiral staircase set in the tower.
Construction of the house, which is of a total of 1982 sq. ft, has been speeded up by the use of plywood diaphragm units which eliminate a large amount of framing. These units will later be covered with a concrete compound put on under pressure. Designed by Christchurch architect Mr J. A. Hanna, who recently won the Auckland Architectural Association's design award, the house is being built for a Christchurch quantity surveyor, Mr R. A. Forgie.
