SANDBANK VICTORY
Wearing . - well. Sandbank, although now a nlne-year-old, showed sprightly qualities to win the Longbeach High-weight for Mr R. G. Gerard at Ashburton yesterday. The big Dogger Bank gelding led from outside the furlong, and won by three lengths from Expel, which shaded Diamond Hunter and Frosty Light in a races for Mr Gerard, who. was made a life member of the Ashburton club recentiy after serving the club for several years as a member of. the committee. Sandbank has been prepared tor all hl* racing by .J, E. Shaw, and . was ridden yesterday by K. Marahment. Marshment always had Sandbattle In close touch with the pace, tor which Sony was responsible, and there was not much doubt which would win when Mr Gerard’s long atrider came ta the front Expel took the second place after having the run of the race, but Diamond Hunter had to put ■ ta a big run tq reach a cnal- ■ lenging position after 1 being last early.
