(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) FOREST HILLS. The American, S. R. Smith, favoured to win the United States Open tennis championship, overcame a tough challenge to defeat the unranked T. Leonard, of California, in the fourth round of men's singles yesterday. Results were:
Men's singles.—Fourth round: S. R. Smith (United States) beat T. Leonard (United States), 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3; N. Plllc (Jugoslavia) beat W. Bowrey (Australia), 6-2. 6-4, 6-3; R. Taylor Britain) beat C. Dlbley (Australia), 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4; M. Relssen (United States) beat J. Leschly (Denmark), 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3; R. Moore (South Africa) beat H. Fitzgibbon (United States), 6-2, 7-8, 6-2; C. Graebner (United States) beat J. FUlol (Chile), 6-3, A-2, T. Okker (Netherlands) beat T. Sakai (Japan), 6-1, 6-1, <-l; M. Holocek (Czechoslovakia) beat N. Holmes (United States), 241, 6-3. 6-1. 64).
Women’s singles.—-Third round: C. Evert (United States) beat F. Durr (France), 2-6, 6-2, 6-3; B. J. King (United States) beat L. Tuere (United States), 64), 6-2; L. Hunt (Australia) beat W. Gilchrist (Australia), 6-1, 6-1.
