Basketball retards fall

The High School Old Boys player, A. R. Hounsell, scored the most points in the A grade men’s basketball competition this year. Although scoring in only 11 games —his team won one by default and no individual points were recorded—he finished the season with 301 points. This broke the previous record of 262, set by the New Zealand representative, J. R. Fairweather (Checkers), last season. In only two games did Hounsell fail to score more than 20 points and six times he exceeded 30 ; points, another achieve- ; ment previously unmatched.

Last season Hounsell was the third highest scorer with 251 but the previous year, when games were not stopped for infringements, he was top with 152 points. Two other players broke Fairweather’s record. The American student, B. Beard (University) who was named the outstanding guard at the recent New Zealand tournament, scored 294 points from 11 games and R. Spark (Rangiora) finished with 263. Fairweather, who spent a large part of the season away with the New Zealand team, scored 69 points in four games. Spark was the leading scorer in the supplementary competition with 68 from six games. G. Keelty (Burnham) was second with 64.

The highest game total of the year in a championship game was 50, scored by the Y.M.CA. captain, M. Clements. This broke the previous record held by Spark by three points. Twenty-five players exceeded a century this sea-

son, compared with 22 last season, indicating a steady increase in the standard of individual skills. The leading scorers were:—
