Life-saving awards in Canterbury rise
, A decline in the number of awards issued by the Canterbury branch of the Royal Lafe Saving Society (New Zealand) had been arrested and an increase of 258 awards to 5948 compared with the previous year was noted in the sixty-first report to be presented at the annual meeting on September 23.
Record numbers of elementary certificates, intermediate stars and junior instructor’s certificates were awarded
during the year, the report said. It noted the increase “with a feeling of achievement” because the previous year more than half the awards were resuscitation certificates, and the branch had said more awards involving water-work should be obtained to maintain a balance of activity. Branch membership was stable during the year at 71 schools and 16 clubs, but the report said there were a number of schools which had received help from the branch’s technical officers but had not yet affiliated themselves.
