Federal Company’s last steam vessel
The 7806-ton Federal Steam Navigation Company vessel Dorset, at present discharging 3094 tons of general cargo from the United Kingdom at Cashin Quay, is the company’s only steam vessel. The others are motorvessels. She is also one of the oldest vessels of the company, which is an associate of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd. Both are members of the P and O Group. The Dorset will load produce, refrigerated and general cargo at New Zealand ports for Durban. Cape Town and London. At Lyttelton, she will load a quantity of seed and peas for South Africa. ♦ * *
Children from Oaklands School, Halswell, had a trip on Lyttelton harbour aboard the pilot cutter Wairangi yesterday morning. Over a period of one year, ending September 30, 1970, 4627 school children enjoyed similar harbour trips through the courtesy of the Harbour Board. Thousands of South Island children, from Nelson to Queenstown, have been taken on trips. , * * #
There was a labour surplus at Lyttelton when work commenced at 7 a.m. yesterday. Only 349 men were engaged to work and a surplus of 282 men remained. The position should change for the better today as more ships are expected.
