Husband-wife singing team
John Mitchinson and his wife, Maureen Guy, who will sing with the N.Z.B.C. Symphony Orchestra in Christchurch this month, are making their first visit to New Zealand.
Mr Mitchinson won the much-coveted Kathleen Ferrier and Queen’s Prizes in 1957. Since then, he has become known as one of the best singers of his generation. In the last decade Mr Mitchinson has sung with all the principal orchestras and choral societies in Britain, and has made many important appearances on the Continent, and in other parts of the world. He is said to possess a voice of. much more heroic quality than that usually associated with English singers. He has a large repertoire, and sings with equal ease and accomplishment in music of all periods. Maureen Guy, Welsh-born,
began her career when she was awarded a scholarship
I for study at the Guildhall School of Music, where she ' won an impressive number of prizes. Among them was the Worshipful Company of Musicians Silver Medal, which is awarded trienniaily to the most outstanding student. After these successes. Maureen Guy was engaged for four years as a principal mezzo-soprano at Covent Garden. Later she toured Britain, the Continent and Israel. During her New Zealand tour she will also be singing the role of Amneris in the joint New Zealand Opera Company - N.Z.B.C. production of “Aida” in Auckland and Wellington.
